When it comes to Day-1 records in the Tamil film industry, the competition has always been between Rajinikanth and Vijay. Both superstars have consistently dominated the opening-day box office, setting new benchmarks for Tamil cinema.

In 2016, Rajinikanth shattered Baahubali’s opening-day records with Kabali, creating an all-time record at that time. While Rajinikanth hasn’t yet crossed the ₹100 crore opening milestone, it is guaranteed with his upcoming films Coolie and Jailer 2, both of which have massive expectations.

On the other hand, Vijay is the only Tamil actor to have two films with ₹100 crore+ opening-day collectionsLeo (2023) and The Greatest of All Time (2024). With his next big-budget film, he is very likely to set a ₹150 crore opening record, pushing Kollywood’s limits even further.

Apart from these two stars, only Ponniyin Selvan: I & II have managed to enter the Top 10 Day-1 highest-grossing Tamil movies list. If not for these Mani Ratnam-directed epics, the list would have been exclusively occupied by Vijay and Rajinikanth films.

Looking ahead, Ajith Kumar’s upcoming film Vidayumurichi has strong buzz, and if it gets positive word-of-mouth, it may open with ₹80 crore, marking another big milestone in Tamil cinema’s box office history.

While Rajinikanth and Vijay continue to dominate the Tamil film industry’s opening-day records, Suriya and Kamal Haasan recently missed a golden opportunity to join the ₹100 crore club. Their much-anticipated films, Kanguva and Indian 2, had the potential to set massive opening-day records. However, due to negative reviews and disaster talk, both films could only manage around ₹50 crore worldwide on their first day, far below expectations.

Despite this setback, both stars still have strong chances to score ₹100 crore openings in the future. The Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU) is shaping up to be a game-changer, with possible projects like Rolex 2 (featuring Suriya) and Vikram 2 (with Kamal Haasan). Given the massive success of Vikram (2022), these sequels could easily surpass the ₹100 crore mark on their opening day.

Apart from them, Karthi is also in contention for a ₹100 crore opening with his upcoming film Kaithi 2, another highly anticipated LCU project. The first film, Kaithi (2019), was a huge success, and the sequel has the potential to break into the big league.

If these films live up to the hype and deliver strong content, Tamil cinema could soon see more actors joining the ₹100 crore opening club, making the industry even more competitive at the box office.
