Compared to its first part Enthiran (Robo), 2.0 fell short of expectations despite its grand scale and massive hype. The film was highly anticipated, especially after the record-breaking success of Baahubali 2, with box office analysts predicting it to cross the ₹1,000 crore mark. However, it couldn’t quite reach that milestone.
The film opened to a thunderous response, grossing approximately ₹97 crore worldwide on its first day, making it 3rd biggest opener in Indian cinema. In the domestic market, 2.0 performed exceptionally well in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh, with the Hindi-dubbed version also contributed significantly to its overall collections. The film grossed around ₹523 crore in India alone, with the Hindi version grossed over ₹244 crore.
Overseas, 2.0 enjoyed strong collections, particularly in markets like the USA, UAE, and China, taking its total worldwide gross to an impressive ₹717 crore. The film became the highest-grossing Tamil film at the time and one of the top Indian films globally.
While 2.0 was praised for its groundbreaking VFX, grand visuals, and Rajinikanth’s charismatic presence, it received mixed reviews regarding its screenplay and pacing. However, the film’s spectacle-driven appeal ensured a steady run at the box office, especially in South Indian territories.
